One-Step or Two-Step Optimization and the Overfitting Phenomenon: A Case Study on Time Series Classification

    Get PDF
For the last few decades, optimization has been developing at a fast rate. Bio-inspired optimization algorithms are metaheuristics inspired by nature. These algorithms have been applied to solve different problems in engineering, economics, and other domains. Bio-inspired algorithms have also been applied in different branches of information technology such as networking and software engineering. Time series data mining is a field of information technology that has its share of these applications too. In previous works we showed how bio-inspired algorithms such as the genetic algorithms and differential evolution can be used to find the locations of the breakpoints used in the symbolic aggregate approximation of time series representation, and in another work we showed how we can utilize the particle swarm optimization, one of the famous bio-inspired algorithms, to set weights to the different segments in the symbolic aggregate approximation representation. In this paper we present, in two different approaches, a new meta optimization process that produces optimal locations of the breakpoints in addition to optimal weights of the segments. The experiments of time series classification task that we conducted show an interesting example of how the overfitting phenomenon, a frequently encountered problem in data mining which happens when the model overfits the training set, can interfere in the optimization process and hide the superior performance of an optimization algorithm

    The Extended Edit Distance Metric

Similarity search is an important problem in information retrieval. This similarity is based on a distance. Symbolic representation of time series has attracted many researchers recently, since it reduces the dimensionality of these high dimensional data objects. We propose a new distance metric that is applied to symbolic data objects and we test it on time series data bases in a classification task. We compare it to other distances that are well known in the literature for symbolic data objects. We also prove, mathematically, that our distance is metric.Comment: Technical repor

Biometric multimodal security simulation on schedule Ii controlled drug

    Get PDF
The paper present a multimodal (multi biometrics) security system focusing on the implementation of fingerprint recognition and facial feature recognition to enhance the existing method of security using password or personal identification number (PIN). This project is operated through a personal computer where all the identification for fingerprint and facial feature are done by using specific software. Successful identification will send a signal through a serial communication circuit and open an application. In this project, the final application should be a cupboard that store and secure schedule II controlled drug in hospital. Due to some problem, the final application was replaced by using a light emitting diode (LED) simulation circuit

Application of Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES) for Subsurface Profiling in Weh Island, Aceh Province

Groundwater availability is the main concern in a developing region such as Weh Island, Aceh. To locate groundwater resources, vertical electrical sounding (VES) was used to identify subsurface profiles. The study area is located on a volcanic island. The lithology consists of volcanic rocks as andesite lava and pyroclastic rocks as lapily-tuff until breccia. VES method was carried out in 4 measurement points using the Schlumberger array. The resistivity value used to identify subsurface lithology. The top layer of alluvium and weathered lava have resistivity ranges from 14.3 Ωm to 17.7 Ωm with thickness varies from 0 m – 17.4 m. It is followed by andesite resistivity ranges from 17.3 Ωm to 18.2 Ωm with averages thickness is 17.4 m – 35.2 m. Finally, the bottom layer is filled by breccia-tuff with resistivity value from 5.5 Ωm to 7.3 Ωm. The physical properties of some related rocks allow water accumulation to their bodies. The current polarization indicates water content in the pore space of breecia at the study area which polarization point is identified as the water table

Energy-aware cooperative wireless networks with multiple cognitive users

    Get PDF
In this paper, we study and analyze cooperative cognitive radio networks with arbitrary number of secondary users (SUs). Each SU is considered a prospective relay for the primary user (PU) besides having its own data transmission demand. We consider a multi-packet transmission framework that allows multiple SUs to transmit simultaneously because of dirty-paper coding. We propose power allocation and scheduling policies that optimize the throughput for both PU and SU with minimum energy expenditure. The performance of the system is evaluated in terms of throughput and delay under different opportunistic relay selection policies. Toward this objective, we present a mathematical framework for deriving stability conditions for all queues in the system. Consequently, the throughput of both primary and secondary links is quantified. Furthermore, a moment generating function approach is employed to derive a closed-form expression for the average delay encountered by the PU packets. Results reveal that we achieve better performance in terms of throughput and delay at lower energy cost as compared with equal power allocation schemes proposed earlier in the literature. Extensive simulations are conducted to validate our theoretical findings

Characterization of Landslide geometry using Seismic Refraction Tomography in the GayoLues, Indonesia

Landslides are the most common geological phenomenon in Indonesia. The event is damage to public infrastructure, and fatalities was a big impact. Therefore, mapping the geometry of landslides is a part of the mitigation effort possible by geophysical methods. In this research, we applied seismic refraction tomography (SRT) to study the geometry of the sliding zone from the landslide event.TheNational Disaster Management Authority reported that the area was frequently occurring landslide disaster, i.e. 2018, 2019 and 2020 which caused the public infrastructure and obstructed the road access from the central to the west of Aceh. The SRT was measured in two profileslong the road.Data measurements were conducted on the side of the Babahrot - GayoLues road section that had experienced landslides.Measurements were made using the Seismograph PASI 16S24-P and 24 geophones to obtain a 92-meterlong profile with 2 meter spacing between the geophones. P-wave velocity data modeling is done using ZondST2D software. The results of modeling profiles 1 and 2 describe three different subsurface layers. The SRT profile 1 model consists of slate (0.2 - 0.7 km/s), clay (0.8 - 1.3 km/s), and sandy clay (1.4 - 1.9 km/s).While, the model of profile 2 consists of slate (0.5 - 1.0 km/s), clay (1.1 - 1.6 km/ s), and sandy clay (1.7 - 2.5 km/s).The contrasting wave velocity model shows that the SRT method can be used in landslide studies as a reference in determining the mechanism of the landslide system
